Dopo aver pubblicato gli autoesplicativi e perfettamente in tema "Battle hymns" nel 1982, i Manowar pubblicarono altri tre influenti e innovativi album heavy metal prima di firmare con Atlantic Records nel 1987 per "Fighting the world". Non passò molto tempo prima che un secondo LP fosse pubblicato da Atlantic nel 1988. "Kings of Metal" ha dimostrato di essere un punto culminante commerciale con i singoli "Wheels of fire" e "Kings of Metal". Il tour "Kings of Metal" è continuato per tre anni e ha portato i Manowar in tutto il mondo. Ci sono voluti quattro anni prima che un altro disco dei Manowar - "Triumph of steel" - venisse pubblicato.
