The Mars Volta remains true to themselves: it is subtly subversive - endlessly inventive, but never at the expense of the song. Similarly, the grand rock movements and prog complexities of their pioneering releases have given way to greater sonic subtlety, immediacy, and directness. But even as The Mars Volta stays away from grand guignol embellishments, it remains a dark, powerful, and moving listening experience, mature and deeply satisfying in its restraint.
