"Tattoo You" è stato originariamente pubblicato il 24 agosto 1981 dalla Rolling Stones Records. È il sedicesimo album in studio britannico e il diciottesimo americano delle leggende del rock inglese.
Le nove canzoni del disco sono per lo più outtake in studio che sono state registrate negli anni '70. Keith Richards ha detto: "Il problema di" Tattoo You "non era che abbiamo smesso di scrivere cose nuove, era una questione di tempo. Eravamo d'accordo che volevamo andare in tour e volevamo fare un tour dopo un disco. Non abbiamo avuto il tempo di registrare un album completamente nuovo e iniziare il tour".
"Start Me Up" è anche una delle canzoni più famose degli Stones su "Tattoo You". Ha raggiunto il numero due della classifica dei singoli di Billboard degli Stati Uniti. L'album ha raggiunto il numero uno negli Stati Uniti, il numero due nel Regno Unito e il numero tre in Germania.
